The Book of Ingenious Devices
Banu Musa Bin Shakir
English translation with introduction and annotations by Donald Donald R. Hill

Kitab al-Hiyal provides diagrams and descriptions of more than 100 different devices which demonstrate a clear understanding of mathematical and scientific principles of hydrostatic, aerostatic, pneumatics and of mechanics, which are intelligently applied in mechanical engineering and technology. It was written by three talented brothers known as Banu Musa (the sons of Musa) in Baghdad in the third century after Hijra (9th century AD). Their empirical mastery of aerostatics enabled them to invent the double concentric siphon and they were the first to use conical valves as a component in their applications. Includes bibliography, glossary of Arabic terms, and index.

Islam and Science
Muzaffar Iqbal

Islam and Science provides an authentic discourse on the Islamic understanding of the physical cosmos, God’s relationship to the created world and the historical and cultural forces that have shaped and defined Muslim attitudes towards science. What was Islamic in the Islamic scientific tradition? How was it rooted in the Qur'anic worldview and whatever happened to it? These are some of the facets of this rich and fascinating account of a tradition that spans eight centuries and covers a vast geographical region.
Written from within, this well-researched work is a ground-breaking exploration of some of the most fundamental questions in the Islam and science discourse. Muzaffar Iqbal explores the process of appropriation and transformation of the Islamic scientific tradition in Europe during the three centuries leading up to the Scientific Revolution, providing the necessary background for understanding the contemporary relationship between Islam and modern science.

Contents: Introduction; The Beginning; And These Are the Signs; Making of the Tradition; Islam and Science Nexus; Withering of the Tradition; Transmission and Transformation; Winds of Change; The Colonial Cut; The Colonized Discourse; The Scientific Exegesis; The New Nexus; Bibliography; Index.

Islam, Science, Muslims, and Technology: Seyyed Hossein Nasr in Conversation with Muzaffar Iqbal brings into sharp relief important dilemmas faced by the Muslim world today, especially in reference to modern science and technology. In three full-length articles and four focused conversations Seyyed Hossein Nasr and Muzaffar Iqbal explore Islamic views on the origin of the cosmos and life, various dimensions of the relationship between Islam and science, Muslim attitudes toward modern science and technology, and the environmental crisis. At the heart of these wide-ranging conversations is what can perhaps be called the most pressing issue of our times: the future course of Islamic civilization.
